GET TO KNOW NELLIE

Elizabeth Cochran Seaman (May 5, 1864–January 27, 1922) — better known by her pen name Nellie Bly, was an American journalist, industrialist, inventor and charity worker. She became a reporter at the Pittsburg (no H at the time) Dispatch with her early writing focused on a series of investigative articles on women factory workers. After the newspaper received complaints from factory owners, she was forced to cover fashion, the home and gardening, which was expected of female journalists at the time. At 21 years old, she grew bored with day-to-day newspaper life and took an assignment that had her spending six months covering the lives and customs of Mexican people along with the country’s corrupt government. Despite the hard-hitting journalism, Bly was once again reassigned to the women’s pages.

No longer willing to play this role, Bly left a note for one of the chauvinistic columnists:

Dear Q.O., I am off for New York. Look out for me. Bly.

And people couldn’t help but notice her. Once in the Big Apple, she continued her unique style of investigative reporting. Most notably, Bly went undercover as someone with mental illness, spending 10 days at the Women’s Asylum on Blackwell Island and writing a best-selling report about the hospital’s horrific conditions. She also took on the adventure of fictional character Phineas Fogg from Jules Verne’s “Around the World in Eighty Days,” successfully completing the journey in 72 days.
